Do I need to build on a level surface?

Yes you do! Well as level as you can find. It does not need to be 100% level, it just must not be on a heavy slope. As long as it looks good to the eye then you know it’s fine.

Do I have to build on a concrete slab?

No you do not. You can build on grass, sand , tar, wood or anything. It is just a good idea to elevate the ramp off the ground so that water does not sit around it and cause rot. The technique we use is to use cement blocks or concrete pavers underneath your ramp. Not only does this elevate your minramp off the ground but it allows you to use shims between your ramp and the blocks to find the perfect level.

How do I use the block technique?

The block technique works great on surfaces that are not completely level. However you must just take your time with this part, once the whole ramp is built it is extremely difficult to add more blocks. Spend some time getting it right. Lay out your blocks, pavers, bricks or what ever you have along the perimeter as well as along the intersecting points of the sections (i.e. where the transition substructures meets the flat bottom frames). Use the provided block layout diagram to guide you as to where to put your blocks.  The more blocks you use the better, but for 2ft ramps 25 is enough. Four 3ft ramps 30 is enough and for 4ft ramps 40 is enough.

How do I make all the blocks level?

Now that you have blocks laid out along the perimeter and all points of intersection, you’ll want to make sure each block is level to all of the other ones. Using a level (at least 1 metre in length) and one of the flat bottom long struts from your mini ramp kit, place the flat bottom long strut from the highest block to another nearby block and put the level on top of the span to ensure it is level. To match heights you can either stack blocks, dig the bricks down into the dirt, or use cut up/ scrap pieces of plywood as shims between the block and substructure. Repeat this process for all of the other spans between blocks. Once your foundation is level and solid, you’re ready to build your ramp.
